Welcome to June, National Safety Month!

Injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages — and they are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. The good news is everyone can get involved to help improve safety and prevent injuries.

During National Safety Month, Browning & Meyer Co., LPA, is working with community members to help reduce

the risk of injuries. This June, we encourage you to learn more about important safety issues like preventing slips, trips, and falls.

One in 3 older adults falls each year. Many falls lead to broken bones and other health problems. In Ohio, falls are the leading cause of injury for people 65 and older. Ohioans 65 and older account for more than 8 out of 10 fatal falls; while they represent just 14 percent of the state population.

Stay Active and Healthy to Prevent Falls

  • Simple exercise, like walking or swimming at least 15 minutes a day can help build muscle strength and improve balance, which can prevent falls.*
  • Find a good balance and exercise program, like tai chi, to build balance, strength, and flexibility. Select a program you like and take a friend.*
  • Talk to your health care provider and ask for an assessment of your risk of falling. Share your history of recent falls.
  • Regularly review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist for side effects that may increase your risk of falling.
  • Drink 6-8 glasses of non-alcoholic liquids each day to prevent low blood pressure, fatigue and confusion.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet with a variety of vegetables and calcium-rich foods like yogurt, cheese, milk, orange juice, tofu and calcium-fortified cereals to promote your health.

* Always consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise routine or program.

Keeping the Spring in Your Step!

  • Severe weather and conditions can increase your risk of falling. Falls are not a normal part of aging, but as we age, we may be more susceptible to serious injury from a fall. However, most falls can be prevented when you understand your risks and take steps to remove or avoid hazards.
  • Rain and mud. As we leave spring and head into summer, severe weather threats remain. Be aware: Mud can be as slippery as snow and ice and can get on a variety of surfaces indoors and out. Avoid walkways that are covered with mud. Clean wet and dried mud off of your shoes and walking aids to maintain the most traction.
  • Storms. Storms can cause a variety of tripping hazards from power outages to debris in outdoor walkways. If you can’t see the path before you, find another way!
  • Flooding. Never walk or drive into flood waters! Still water can make you trip and moving water can knock you off your feet.
  • Increased activity. Now that nicer weather is here, you are likely to be more active. Ask your doctor or physical therapist about strategies to safely increase your activity level.
  • Get your vision and hearing checked annually and update your eyeglasses.
  • Slow down and think through the task you are performing. Be mindful of possible falls risks and act accordingly.
